Federal and State Grants

Both the Federal and State governments offer funding options to students; Federal funding is consistent across the nation, while State funding will vary according to your state and its financial well being, or its ability to sustain robust funding for students of its post secondary schools. In most cases, funding comes in the form of need-based grants, or grants distributed on the basis of financial need (as determined by the income disclosure element of your application). The most well known of these is the Federal Pell Grant.

States may also implement certain programs to provide financial incentive to students to enter a field for which there is great need of trained professionals – like nursing for instance.

While these grants are not specifically for budding pharmacists, they can be used towards such a program, providing it is properly accredited. Better yet, applying is simple and free; just submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid or FAFSA (more details on the form and where to obtain it here).

Most states use the data from the FAFSA to determine eligibility for their own programs, so in most cases, submitting the FAFSA covers you at both the state and Federal levels.
